Who is it for?

This qualification is aimed at adults aged 19+ who want to develop counselling skills for work or personal environments. It is suitable for learners who wish to progress onto more advanced qualifications or use to complement health and social care, children’s care, learning and development, voluntary and community work programmes.

It does not qualify learners to become a counsellor.

What will I learn?

You’ll develop counselling skills, understand the different approaches involved in the use of counselling skills and appreciate the importance of self-development. Content includes:

  • core counselling skills
  • boundaries that need to be taken into account when starting a new helping relationship
  • key elements of psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive-behavioural theory
  • ways in which people experience discrimination
  • key legal aspects of anti-discriminatory practice
  • ways to address difference and diversity in counselling skills practice
  • benefits of giving and receiving feedback for personal development
  • how personal and/or professional support can be used to highlight issues arising from the use of counselling skills

What could I do after this?

This qualification will give you skills that can be used at home, when volunteering, at work or when in the community. It can also act as a stepping stone to becoming a qualified counsellor – the next step would be progressing onto a Level 3 qualification with other providers, followed by a Level 4 qualification which provides counsellor accreditation.
