Who it’s for:
This course is for adults aged 19+ who want to develop their maths knowledge and gain an accredited qualification. You’ll gain the confidence and skills to use maths in a variety of contexts, and work towards an accredited Functional Skills qualification at Level 1 or Level 2.
This course is not suitable for people with very basic maths skills, so you will need to take a short computer-based assessment here before enrolling. This will tell us whether the course is at the right level for you.
What you’ll learn:
In this course you will explore numbers and the number system; using common measures, shape and space; and handling information and data. You’ll also learn how to solve mathematical problems, make mathematical decisions and apply maths to elements of daily life, such as when at work, shopping, managing finances and helping children with homework.
This course’s content includes learning how to:
- Read, write, order, compare and use numbers (including positive and negative)
- Find fractions of quantities or measurements
- Work with simple ratio and direct proportions
- Calculate percentages, including interest and discounts on amounts of money
- Convert between units of length, weight, capacity, money and time
- Calculate the area and volume of shapes
- Find the mean and range of quantities
- Use probability to find and compare the likelihood of events
- Solve mathematical problems to produce sensible and reasonable answers
