Who is it for?

This course is for adults aged 19+ who want to start their pottery journey. This includes complete beginners, those who have basic experience of some pottery techniques but wish to learn others, or those whose pottery experience was a long time ago and wish to re-learn basic techniques.

What will I learn?

In this course, you will be taught each of the basic hand-building pottery techniques: pinching, slab-building and moulding, coil building, simple structure, glazing and basic throwing on the wheel (limited to two learners at a time). Our tutor will demonstrate techniques and you’ll make and decorate a functional or decorative ceramic item using each technique. Following learning of the basic techniques, you will have time to practice and build your skills to create your own items under guidance from the tutor.

What could I do after this?

If you are a complete beginner, you could remain in this class for one more term as a ‘Beginner Plus’ before moving up to our Intermediate Pottery courses.

If you are already a ‘Beginner Plus’, you could progress onto our Intermediate Pottery courses on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday evenings and complete up to 3 terms with either tutor.

You could also seek alternative Pottery courses with other providers, or try another creative course at RACL.

Your tutor can help advise and guide you towards further courses or study elsewhere to enhance your creative practice. Advice is given for those wanting to set up their own workshops at home and many have done this. Information on local exhibitions, pottery markets and specific short courses is shared to provide inspiration for learners.

If you are a new learner, once you have reserved a place on Pottery for Beginners, you will be sent a link to our short online initial assessment survey. This must be completed before your enrolment can progress.
