Course Code: C265
Course Dates: Thursday, 2 May 2019 to 13 Jun 2019
Course Time: Afternoon, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Number of Sessions: 6
Venue: Oakham Enterprise Park

Beginners will learn the skills and techniques needed to make pottery items which can be used in the home, garden or for purely decorative purposes. Skills include how to choose and prepare clay ready for a particular project, handbuilding skills (pinching, using soft slabs and coiling) and simple decoration using ceramic colourants and glazes. We have two pottery wheels so throwing will also be covered for those interested in learning this skill.
More experienced learners will be encouraged to expand on the skills they already have, try out some new techniques, undertake some glaze/oxide testing and produce some original designs in sketchbooks which will be taken through into actual ceramic pieces with guidance from the tutor as required. A certain amount of research (books, magazines and/or internet) will be encouraged.

Course outcomes:
• Beginners will learn how to make ceramic items by pinching, slabbing and coiling
• Experienced learners will be encouraged to expand their skills and knowledge by researching and testing.
• All learners will research at least one professional potter, taking ideas from their chosen potter and use these ideas to inform their own work.
• Use of a notebook/sketchbook is highly recommended on this course.
