Venue: Oakham Enterprise Park

What will I learn?
Beginners will learn the skills and techniques needed to make pottery items which can be used in the home, garden or for purely decorative purposes. Skills include how to choose and prepare clay ready for a particular project, handbuilding skills (pinching, using soft slabs and coiling) and simple decoration using ceramic colours and glazes. We have two pottery wheels so throwing will also be covered for those interested in learning this skill.
More experienced learners will be encouraged to expand on the skills they already have, try out some new techniques, undertake some glaze/oxide testing and produce some original designs in sketchbooks which will be taken through into actual ceramic pieces with guidance from the tutor as required. Research using books, magazines and/or internet is always encouraged. Pottery items are charged at 60p per 100g in weight to offset some of the cost of glazes and firing.
Course outcomes:
Learners will:
Produce a number of decorated ceramic items eg for the home or garden (with step by step guidance from the tutor for beginners).
Beginners will learn how to make ceramic items by pinching, slabbing and coiling
Experienced learners will be encouraged to expand their skills and knowledge by researching and testing.
All learners will research at least one professional potter, taking ideas from their chosen potter and use these ideas to inform their own work.
Use of a notebook/sketchbook is highly recommended on this course.
