What will I learn?
This course is suitable for learners of all abilities and confidences. Beginners will learn the skills and techniques needed to make pottery items which can be used in the home, garden or for purely decorative purposes. Skills include how to choose and prepare clay ready for a particular project and handbuilding skills (pinching, using soft slabs and coiling). We will study and practise a selection of decorative techniques over the course, including the use of coloured slips, underglazes and glazes, and discuss other techniques which might include impressing, stamping, drawing on clay, carving etc. Sculpture techniques can also be covered for those who would like to sculpt.
We have two portable wheels in the classroom which the group shares, so there will be an opportunity to have a go at throwing a pot for those who want to.
The course is very flexible and actual skills taught will be sensitive to the aspirations of the individuals in the group.
