Who is it for?
This two-day course (12 April and 10 May) is aimed at anyone who has a sewing machine, knows how to use it and would like to make clothes.
What will I learn?
You will explore a variety of dressmaking techniques and increase your confidence as you work to produce clothing that suits your individual preferences. You’ll choose your own project, so will need to purchase and bring your own materials and pattern.
Through a combination of demonstrations, simple instructions and inspirational tips, our tutor will teach you how to:
- Read, understand and utilize a commercial pattern
- Work to a correct pattern lay plan.
- Carry out basic pattern alterations to customize the fit
- Use the correct fabric preparation and cutting techniques
- Incorporate dressmaking techniques such as darts, zip insertions, facings & seam finishing.
- Build a portfolio of dressmaking techniques.
What could I do after this?
As well as being able to make clothes at home, you could continue to develop your dressmaking skills by joining RALSS’ next dressmaking course (June and July) or courses offered by other providers. You could also progress onto more advanced projects such as using stretch fabrics or Modern Tailoring.
